Bundit Puangthong

Bundit Puangthong is a contemporary Thai artist living in Melbourne, whose practice has found an affinity between traditional Thai temple art and Melbourne street art culture. Initially training at the south Thai art academy in traditional temple art, and experienced in painting temple murals, Puangthong developed a love for painting large compositions with many elements, including bright layers of paint, detailed brushwork and stencils inspired by Buddhist symbols and motifs.

Later studying a masters degree in painting and printmaking at Chiang Mai University, the traditional roots of Puangthong’s practice were provided a contemporary aspect, exposing him to modern art. Arriving in Melbourne, Puangthong was impressed by the similarities between street art stencilling and his early training, as stencilling is a traditional Thai practice used in temple art.

Puangthong began using stencils in his paintings, and although this process is an established traditional practice in Thailand, his paintings in Melbourne took on an usual contemporary feel. Puangthong is represented by Edwina Corlette Gallery.
